Travel smarter

Why travelers choose eSIM over physical SIM cards

Traditional SIM cards mean hunting for a local store when you land, often overcharged at the airport. An eSIM lets you buy before you leave, activate in seconds, and keep your home number active at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about eSIMs and how they work.

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card built into your device. Instead of inserting a physical card, you download a data plan directly to your phone by scanning a QR code. Once installed, the eSIM connects you to local networks in your destination — giving you data without roaming charges on your regular plan.

Most modern smartphones support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, iPad Pro, and many more. You can check your device on our device compatibility page. On iPhone, go to Settings → General → About — if you see "Digital SIM" or "EID", your phone is eSIM ready.

Activation is instant. After payment, you receive a QR code by email — usually within seconds. Scan it on your device and follow the on-screen steps. The whole process takes less than 2 minutes. Your eSIM data plan will be ready to use as soon as you arrive in your destination (some plans activate immediately, others activate on first use).

Yes! Most eSIM-compatible phones are dual-SIM devices. Your physical SIM (with your regular number) stays in your phone alongside the eSIM data plan. You can still make and receive calls on your home number, while all internet traffic goes through the local eSIM data plan — saving you from expensive roaming fees.

It depends on the plan. Most plans start counting their validity period from the moment you first use data, not from the time of purchase. This means you can buy your eSIM weeks before travel and it won't expire until you've actually started using it. Plan details will always specify the exact activation policy.

When your data runs out, your internet connection will stop (it won't switch to expensive roaming automatically). You can purchase a new plan, or in many cases a top-up, directly on our website. Your eSIM profile stays on your device — you don't need to re-scan a QR code for top-ups.

Absolutely. eSIMs use the same security standards as physical SIM cards and are protected by your device's built-in encryption. Unlike a physical SIM, an eSIM cannot be removed by pickpockets or cloned by fraudsters — your data plan is stored securely on the device's embedded chip. All payments are processed through SSL-encrypted gateways, so your personal and financial information is always protected.

Each eSIM QR code is tied to a single device and can only be installed once for security. However, you can purchase separate eSIM plans for each device you travel with. Most plans also support Wi-Fi hotspot (tethering), so you can share your eSIM data connection with a tablet or laptop through your phone.

If you travel outside the coverage zone of your current eSIM plan, data on that plan will not work in the new country. You'll need a separate plan for that destination. For multi-country trips, we recommend a regional or global eSIM plan — it covers all countries on your itinerary under a single purchase and is usually the most cost-effective option.

Most modern smartphones can store between 5 and 20 eSIM profiles, though only 1–2 can be active at once. iPhones running iOS 16 or later support up to 20 stored eSIMs. This means you can pre-install plans for several upcoming trips and simply switch between them when you travel — no re-scanning required.
